Basel Life Sciences Circular Economy Roadmap – Innovative Business Practices

On behalf of BaselCircular, the association Go Circular in Life Science conducted a comprehensive analysis of the life sciences ecosystem in the Basel region.
The goal was to identify existing potentials and challenges in the field of circular economy and to outline concrete courses of action.
The study provides valuable insights for decision-makers in politics, economic development, and research, as well as for companies in the pharmaceutical, MedTech, and healthcare sectors — for example, through case studies, application areas, and inspiration for their own circular initiatives.

Key Outcomes
-
Systematic fields of action across the entire value chain: At the heart of the analysis is a structured overview of opportunities and challenges for increasing circularity in the life sciences sector. The resulting, thematically grouped fields of action form the foundation for strategic prioritization, project development, and cross-sector collaboration.
-
The six selected workstreams have significant leverage: From industrial symbioses to reuse strategies and plastic recycling, the action plan addresses the sector’s major material, energy, and cost drivers. It combines regulatory, technical, and business model levers.
-
Coordinated action is essential: Individual initiatives are not enough: workshops, knowledge platforms, accredited circular economy (CE) training, and the co-creation of concrete pilot projects with companies, research institutions, and public stakeholders must be purposefully coordinated. This is necessary to break down silos, make best practices visible, and reduce investment risks. GCiLS takes on the role of a neutral orchestrator in this process.
