Transformation of the life sciences industry – GCiLS workshop at FHNW

28. Apr. 2025

GCiLS contributed insights from its ecosystem analysis and facilitated a multi-stakeholder workshop at FHNW (April 2023

On 28 April 2023, Go Circular in Life Sciences (GCiLS) contributed to the event Transformation of the Life Sciences Industry at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). The event brought together representatives from industry, academia and funding organisations to explore pathways towards a more circular life sciences sector.

On behalf of GCiLS, Emmanuel Oertlé presented key findings from the GCiLS ecosystem analysis on circular economy opportunities in the Basel life sciences region. The analysis was conducted in collaboration with Impact Hub Basel and supported by BaselCircular, and provided a shared evidence base for further discussion.

In the afternoon, GCiLS hosted a dedicated workshop session building on these insights. Participants engaged in focused exchange and jointly developed initial project ideas addressing concrete challenges along the life-sciences value chain. Topics included, among others, chemical recycling of Medtech plastics, circular packaging solutions, material databases, novel disinfection processes, equipment sharing models and innovations in waste management.

GCiLS would like to thank all participants for their active engagement and valuable contributions. Special thanks go to the workshop moderators Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Riedl (FHNW School of Life Sciences) and Emmanuel Oertlé, who guided the discussions and synthesis of ideas.

The workshop formed part of the early collaborative processes that informed subsequent GCiLS activities, including the publication of the ecosystem analysis and the further development of project-based initiatives.
