Cross-sector Collaboration

About

The Support Industrial Symbiosis for Basel Area field emphasizes analyzing and facilitating the exchange of waste, energy, and resources between life science companies and other entities. Key projects include conducting an in-depth material flow analysis for the region to identify maximum environmental impact opportunities, developing a stakeholder mapping, and applying concepts like Eco-industrial parks and the “Swircular” Model to the Basel Area's life science sector. The goal is to maximize resource efficiency by localizing production stages, minimizing complex transport, and creating specialized centers for the collection, repair, and refurbishment of discarded equipment in collaboration with waste management and manufacturing partners.

Support Industrial Symbiosis for Basel Area

Analyze and facilitate industrial symbiosis in the region to exchange waste, materials, and energy between the life sciences and other sectors.

  • Conduct an in-depth material flow analysis for healthcare and life science sector in the region, including lifecycle assessment in order to identify potential options with maximal environmental impact.

  • Develop an interactive stakeholder mapping of involved players in the region and their interaction.

  • Apply concepts of Eco-industrial parks to the Basel Area as a whole (Industrial Symbiosis, flows between players, etc).

  • Explore opportunities to localize certain production stages, minimizing complex transport chains, CO}_2$ emissions, and supply chain vulnerabilities. (Production & Manufacturing)

  • Collaborate with manufacturers and healthcare providers to collect, repair, and refurbish discarded medical devices and lab equipment. Create specialized refurbishment centres. (Waste Management)

  • Apply the "Swircular" Model to the Life Science Sector; "Swircular" is a circular economy platform used in the construction sector.

  • Map current projects in carbon utilization, recycling, and industrial symbiosis.
